The extremely high density of these apex predators attracts anglers from around the world, injecting millions of dollars into local economies. It has been estimated that a sailfish caught and released by a recreational angler is worth up to $800, while one that is caught as bycatch in commercial operations is worth $50 in local markets.

In 1953, Alfred Glassel Jr. caught the largest billfish ever recorded offshore in Cabo Blanco, Peru. The Black Marlin was 1560 lbs.
